Association of Mountaineering Instructor

Climbing Skills

Whether it’s your first time climbing or you’ve already learnt some skills, our exciting range of Climbing Skills courses can be tailored to meet your specific requirements and time constraints.

Our Climbing Skills courses can be run over single or multiple days are usually run on a bespoke basis in and around Bristol and the South West. From our home in Bristol we have easy access to some of the best climbing venues in the country. All you need is an adventurous spirit and the desire to have fun.

All equipment and instruction is provided by highly qualified and experienced climbers and Mountaineering Instructors.

We also offer Private Guided Climbing if you’d like to spend a day climbing classic routes with a Mountaineering Instructor. Our Group Climbing activities are ideal for larger groups looking for a fun and exciting introduction to rock climbing at a group friendly outdoor climbing venue. Perfect for Stag & Hen and Corporate groups.

Our popular courses include:

Climbing introduction courses

Climbing introduction courses are designed for individuals and small groups looking for an introductory taster session of climbing. We teach the basics of climbing in a safe and fun environment. No previous experience is necessary and all equipment and instruction is provided.

Adventurous beginner courses

Adventurous beginner courses are ideal for individuals or small groups looking for a bit more than a complete beginner’s introduction to climbing. We look at the essential skills needed to get you started but keep the emphasis on fun. No previous experience is necessary other than an adventurous spirit and the desire to have fun.

Indoor to Outdoor climber courses

Indoor to Outdoor climber courses are designed for people who have had some experience climbing at an indoor wall. We look to build on skills which you have already acquired at the wall and transfer these to the outdoors. No outside climbing experience is required though we’d expect you to be able to put on a harness, tie in to the end of a rope and use a belay device.

Learn to Lead course

Learn to Lead course is ideal for anyone with seconding experience who wants to lead their first climb. We cover all of the essential aspects of lead climbing from selection of protection and efficient rope work to understanding guidebooks and route choice. We’ll develop your understanding of lead climbing and improve your confidence in leading easy climbs. We’d expect you to be able to have had experience of belaying, tying into anchors and be a competent second. A reasonable understanding of climbing is important as the next step into learning to lead is a big and potentially serious one.

Sea cliff climbing courses

Sea cliff climbing courses are designed for any adventurous climber who wants to discover the delights and intricacies of sea cliff climbing. Often with a committing abseil access we aim to show you what sea cliff climbing is all about. Sea cliff climbing is not for the faint hearted and we’d expect you to be a competent second with a reasonable understanding of the basics i.e. belaying, tying in, abseiling etc. Based in Bristol we would look to travel to some of the South West’s famous sea cliff climbing locations. We are equally located between the South Coast of Dorset, South Devon, North Devon and South Wales coast lines. A little further away are the magnificent granite sea cliffs of Cornwall. All areas (except Cornwall) can be climbed either as a 1 day adventure from Bristol or over several days.

Sport climbing courses

Sport climbing courses are designed for any climber who wants to experience the fun of lead climbing but in a safer and faster way. Sport climbs are climbs that are protected by metal bolts permanently drilled into the rock (similar to lead climbing at an indoor wall). This means you can concentrate on the climbing moves without the stress of having to place protection as you progress up the cliff. This allows you to climb harder and quicker and get more routes done in a day. This course is an excellent stepping stone for indoor climbers who want to venture into the world of outdoor climbing. We’ll cover the technical skills such as clipping, belaying and lowering off to keep you safe as well as climbing loads of routes.

Self Rescue courses

Self Rescue courses are designed for climbers of any standard whether beginners or advanced. We look at the principles of self-rescue and what to do if you’re faced with an emergency or need to retreat from a crag. This course is aimed at any climber who wants to be more self reliant when climbing at more adventurous venues. We cover many different techniques and skills of how to look after an injured partner whilst on a crag and escape safely from a multi pitch climb. We focus on improvisation using only the equipment you’d realistically be carrying with you on a climb. We’d expect you to have a good understanding of the basics however i.e. belaying, tying in, placing protection and anchors etc.
